No matter if we are a team or a business, we need to have a clear idea of what our objective is…
What is it that we are trying to accomplish and how do we measure whether or not we ever get there?
Oftentimes we have a talented group of people, but for whatever reason that talented group of people doesn’t ever get shit done because they have no freaking clue where they are going.
Without a road map to get to a certain destination, we will inevitably end up with a bunch of people taking Magellan routes and most likely never finding the end point…
So… How do we avoid this?
In John Doerr’s book I just recently re read, Measure What Matters, Doerr talks about the success of Google and how they implemented OKR’s in the early stages of their development as a company… The OKR’s stand for “Objective Key Results” and were an invaluable staple of tech pioneer Andy Grove at Intel.
It seems a bit ironic, but considering the geniuses that use it, the OKR thing is actually pretty simple…
When we have an objective, we have a game plan and when we have a game plan, we clearly understand the quantifiable key results that will enable us to execute that plan.
Ultimately, OKR’s allow for us to have something concrete to work towards and the key results let us know whether or not we ever got there…
