Center of the universe…

Recently listened to a fascinating book called “From Simi Valley To The Silicon Valley” by Stephen Gillett…

Gillett has an incredibly unique background that includes playing football at University Of Oregon, becoming a world renowned gamer as well as working as an executive officer at some of the world’s most influential companies… He has worked with and was mentored by both Bill Gates and Howard Schultz.

It was interesting to hear about the idiosyncrasies of both men including Gates constantly tapping his foot during meetings and demanding handouts of presentations so he can take notes and Howard’s incessant demand for Starbucks executives to travel to the regions of the world where the Starbucks coffee beans are selected to fully understand and appreciate the process… He even had Gillett, who was the Chief Information Officer, work an extended period at a Starbucks store as a cashier, barista and janitor to truly understand how their stores operate…

The one thing that really resonated with me was when Gillett talked about when he interviewed with Schultz and Schultz told him to go to his local Starbucks and observe everything he saw and experienced…

Their next meeting, Gillett came back with pages of notes but before he could divulge his findings, Howard interjected and told Gillett what he had experienced at his local Starbucks….

When it was Gillett’s turn, he unleashed a plethora of things that Starbucks needed to improve upon. One may think a powerful CEO may get defensive, instead Schultz just listened intently, prompting Gillett to write:

“When Howard Shultz listens to you it becomes clear that you are at the center of his world at that moment.”

The one thing that all great leaders have is the amazing ability to come into the moment and LISTEN… The other trait they typically have is the ability to not take their feelings too personal.

By doing both, Schultz learned about the perceived deficiencies of Starbucks’ day to day operations and also hired a dude considered way outside the box because of his young age and lack of industry knowledge and experience…

Bottom line, we all need to listen more, listen better and let whoever we are listening to become the “center of the universe.”
