The cream will rise ☕️

After the 2001 season spent going up and down between Oakland and Sacramento, I went to play winter ball in the Dominican Republic…

While there, I became the first “import” player in over 20 years to win the Dominican League’s Most Valuable Player award and was part of a Licey team that won the championship in an EPIC 9 game battle against arch rival Aguillas…

When I returned to Spring Training with the A’s, I undoubtedly believed that not only did I deserve to make the team, but I felt I had earned an opportunity to play on a regular basis.

After a slow start to the spring, I finished with a flurry, hitting 3 or 4 homers in the final week of the spring season…

When manager Art Howe called me into his office, I didn’t even think getting sent down was an option and apparently neither did Art.

“You have done absolutely everything you needed to do to make this team but we are sending you down… This isn’t my decision… I’m sorry. Talk to Billy.”

The feeling of rage, anger and overall disappointment engulfed my entire body… In my mind, I couldn’t have done much more. The previous year I went 20/20 in AAA while shuttling between Sacramento and Oakland 4 different times… In my limited playing time in the big leagues, I felt like I had definitely played well enough to warrant more opportunities. When the organization asked me to play winter ball, I did so with a smile on my face and came home with a “Jugador Mas Valioso” trophy and a championship…

Sometimes in life, we can do just about everything in our power to make a team, win a spot or earn a promotion we undoubtedly deserve, but for whatever reason we will get cut or left behind.

I obviously was pissed and I would never ask you to like it, but as we have championed so many times here in the Daily Hustle, life is NOT always fair BUT our reaction to life is. We can’t control the opinions and decisions of other people, but we do have the ability to control our response…

At one point or another, we are all going to get screwed or at least feel like we have been… We need to know that it’s simply part of the process and understand that so long as we maintain the right attitude and the right effort, we will CHARGE forward.

It used to bother me but my Mom always says that “the cream will rise to the top.”  She’s right but we just need to make sure not to chuck the coffee cup against the wall before the cream has a chance to get there. ☕️
