In this volatile political culture we currently live in, it’s amazing how we all of a sudden find ourselves hanging out with people that hold many of the same opinions that we do…
The confirmation bias we seek is so incredibly real and as much as we want to blame it on mass media and fake news, the truth is that it’s been in our DNA for an eternity… We as human beings like being told that we are right, and we like the comfort of agreeable people, thus we consciously & subconsciously seek it out…
Yet by doing this, all we are doing is creating a bigger divide and we inevitably avoid having the necessary & difficult conversations.
Ironically, the difficult conversation, although extremely uncomfortable at times, is the only true path towards progress. When we are able to have a conversation exploring both sides of the aisle, it’s amazing how often resolutions occur…
Yet when there is no constructive conversation and simply emotional overreactions and tantrums, absolutely nothing ever gets solved…
So… Next time we feel incredibly passionate about a topic or situation, let’s make sure to go out of our way to find a contrarian point of view and engage in the invaluable and ever powerful difficult conversation.
Then, if you’re really on the right side of the argument (like I am all the time of course), they eventually will agree with you and tell you how naive and incredibly ignorant they had been the entire time. 😅
