We all have usual and unusual talents that make us who we are…
Oftentimes (never mind, all of the time), it’s up to us to develop those talents.
The development may come easier for some as opposed to others, and at some point, we will most likely hit a plateau… Then what happens?
In baseball, it is perceived that a player will typically have his best season at 27 years old. This is generally the age where guy’s baseball skills will peak physically. Mentally, this is also about the age that guys have accumulated enough experience to properly implement a consistent routine that works for them and allows the player to focus more of his attention on the process as opposed to the outcome…
Once we are able to reach this stage in life, dare I say it… We have reached the top. Think of it as if we just climbed out of the Grand Canyon and we are now on the ledge running for joy…
We celebrate our accomplishments and we are very grateful for the path that we have taken, yet we also know that if we lose focus on putting one foot in front of the other, we will be the main subject of the Tom Petty classic: FREE FALLIN’.
So what’s my point???
After experiencing the absolute depths of the canyons and the slow climb out, we will inevitably reach a plateau. Ironically though, that just so happens to be when the fun run starts.
It’s at this point when our physical and mental awareness is at an all time high, but we also must come face to face with simple reality… When we are at the bottom, there is only one way to go, and the same is true for the top…
The only way to keep running on the ledge without falling off is by focusing all of our attention on each stride. The terrain is beautiful and the views are spectacular on the ledge, but it’s also rocky and dangerous. We must understand that the resistance and obstacles are real, very f*cking real…
Yet, so long as we remain humble and embrace the gorgeously challenging path that we are on, we won’t find ourselves floating through the air singing…
“And all the bad boys are standing in the shadows,
And the good girls are home with broken hearts.
And I’m free,
Free fallin, fallin
Now I’m free,
Free fallin, fallin”
