Hometown Heroes

There is something about hometown pride that has always resonated with me…

I was born in Redwood City and then grew up in San Carlos, Woodside and Portola Valley. When I played for the A’s I settled into Half Moon Bay and post baseball we have split our time between HMB, Truckee and NYC…

Regardless of the fact that I have lived in many different places, each holds a special place in my heart and I love it when I have the opportunity to celebrate the places that have helped mold me into the person I have become.

Each of the above towns have their own unique positive attributes and of course some perceived flaws as well…

Much like us as individuals, no place is perfect but ultimately that is what humanizes both us and the towns we live in.

Interestingly enough Abraham Lincoln once said:

“I like to see a man proud of the place in which he lives. I like to see a man live so that his place will be proud of him.”

Cool quote, but what exactly did Abe mean by this?

When somebody is proud of the place they are from, they typically will do everything in their power to preserve all of the things that make that town great while also figuring out what else they can possibly do to make it even better.

When a person “lives” to make a town proud of them, they think about their actions and how those actions could positively influence and impact others within their hometown.

The bottom line is when we have a vision much larger than our own selfish wants and needs, it has been proven that our performance will be elevated in just about anything that we do which inevitably should allow us to maximize our potential and potentially help others realize theirs…

Hometown Heroes are generally thought of as the service men and women who go off to war to fight for our liberties or the athlete who brings home a world championship or gold medal, yet the reality is that we can all be hometown heroes by simply living a life that makes sure we are proud of the town and the town is proud of us…
