Was watching the end of the Kansas City Chiefs game a couple weeks ago when place kicker Harrison Butker calmly trotted out to the field to kick a game winning 53 yard field goal…Ā
The snap, the hold, the kick… GOOD!Ā
Wait… There was a late whistle just a Butker was striking the ball. The Chiefs had a false start penalty called against them and now Butker was going to have to do it all over again from 5 yards further back.
This second attempt was going to be from 58 yards, which Butker proved he has the leg for by drilling a 58 yarder earlier in the game…
For historical reference, only 1 other player in the history of the NFL has ever hit two 58 plus yard field goals in the same game.
Undeterred, Butker stepped up from 58 and hammered the football with his right foot and split the uprights once again…Ā
One problem though… The Chargers called time out right before the kick so the field goal did not count and Butker was going to have to do it all over again for a third time!!!
On his third attempt, Butker stepped up and made his 3rd consecutive game winning field goal and was immediately mobbed by his team and subsequently hoisted into the air and carried off the field…
So often in life, we do everything we need to do to be successful and then our efforts get ruined by unforeseen happenings… At this point we have a choice to make, take our ball and go home or step the fuck up and do whatever is in our power to figure out a way to get the job done… Two times in a row Butker did his job but his works were trashed by a penalty and a bullshit time out call… Yet, instead of folding, he used these two mishaps as stepping stones and achieved legendary status by making a third consecutive game winning kick from a mind blowing distance.
Harrison Butker isnāt super human and a few years ago he was a practice squad player wonderingĀ if he would ever get a chance to kick in the NFL… Butker had no choice but to simply focus on what was within his control (attitude and effort) and let go of everything else…
Seems like that āJUST KEEP KICKINGā approach is working out pretty well for him. š¦µĀ
