Less is more 🤷‍♂️

“The less tension and effort the faster and more powerful you will be.”
– Bruce Lee

I’ve heard this quote before but most importantly I’ve experienced its message all too often…

While reading Gary Mack’s Mind Gym, he used this Bruce Lee masterpiece in a chapter and followed it up with a compelling story about former NFL tight end Jay Novacek who was also an All American decathlete at the University of Wyoming…

Apparently, while training for the 400, Wyoming’s track coach had Novacek and his other track athletes run a 400 at full speed and then shortly after run the same 400 at 90%.

Shockingly, every one of the athletes recorded a better time in the 2nd 400 that was supposed to be run at a 90% effort…

Why?

Without going to deep into the physiology & psychology of why the 90% effort was faster, let’s just say that RELAXED loose muscles are quick muscles, quick muscles are powerful muscles and powerful muscles are FAST muscles…

There is a term that my legendary strength & conditioning “Coach T” used to always say…

“80 will get you 100.”

When we swing a bat at 100% effort we often over swing and our muscles tense up, become restricted and work against us… Just about anybody who has played golf understands this all too well.

The furthest recorded ball that I hit in the big leagues was a 473 foot shot that landed in some dudes French Fries in the TGIF restaurant above left field in Arizona… When I came into the dugout our hitting coach Kevin Seitzer asked me how it felt. My response…

“Like I barely swung.”

I get it… This all sounds contradictory to the full send effort we typically promote here at the Daily Hustle, but sometimes in life LESS really does mean MORE.
