All of us who ever played baseball are very familiar with “one more!”
For those who did not play, “one more” is an epidemic that all players experience at one point or another… It’s the request to have one more pitch of batting practice thrown, one more ground ball or fly ball hit or possibly one more pitch in the bullpen…
Interestingly, “one more’s” are typically met with groans & ruthless heckles from teammates… Most of it is just pouncing on any opportunity to talk shit but there are a few guys that get genuinely upset if somebody takes 6 hacks during a round of 5…
When “one more” came from my mouth, it usually was because I was unsatisfied with how I had hit or fielded the ball… Each day I was on a constant quest to “end on a good one” which would give me that solid sexy feeling headed home or into a game…
I get it, “one more’s” can often be an annoyance because of the extra time they may take and “one more’s” should never come at the expense of our teammates’ reps…
Yet if we think about what “one more” represents, we should never again bemoan any players request to keep working… Sure, we may have to cut off Johnny Hustle and save him from over swinging himself into a slump, but overall we need to celebrate the “one more” culture, not condemn it!
