Only Takes One ⛳️

In Blog, Hustle Podcast by Eric Byrnes

A few years back, I had the incredible opportunity to play golf with Phil Mickelson…

What was supposed to be one round ended up being 2 rounds in the same day and then another 2 rounds the next day, followed up with a horse racing partnership that lasted several year (we will save that story for another Daily Hustle)…

The first round we played I partnered with my boy Todd LaRocca (Rock) against Phil and Harry Rudolph, a legendary amateur golfer. Needless to say, not enough strokes were handed out and we got THUMPED. When we ran it back in the afternoon round, it was much closer but got edged out on the 18th hole…

Probably because he felt bad that Rock & I lost a small fortune, Phil invited us to play the next day at The Grand in San Diego… Well, either that or because we proved to be easy money…

Typically, really good players like playing with me because I LOVE to gamble, I suck at golf, and apparently I play faster than anybody in the world. 🤷‍♂️That seems to be an efficient & profitable combo for PGA caliber opponents.

The next day, Tim Mickelson (Phil’s brother) and Doug Manchester JR. (the owner of The Grand) joined our group. Once again, I took an absolute beatdown from Phil and he closed me out on an 18 hole match by the 10th hole. 😳

Slaughtered but not discouraged, I stepped up to the tee box on number 11, a 212-yard slightly down hill Par 3… I was the last to hit and the 4 other dudes had their balls scattered all around the green with Phil’s ball about 6 feet from the stick.

Before I hit, I decided I was going to have a pep talk with my club…

“Hello Mr. Trusty 7 Iron. You haven’t been so trusty lately, have you? It’s all good, everyone goes through slumps but it’s how we respond to those slumps that ultimately determine where we end up… Bottom line, it’s time to get your shit together. Phil has beat the piss out of us but f*ck his sandbagging ass… One time, just one time, we are getting inside him and take his ass to the cleaners… Let’s F*CKING GO!!!!”

Yes, that speech was given out loud and completed at some point in my back swing…

When I struck the ball, it felt PURE and then I watched it track toward the left side of the green…

When the ball hit, we could see it head in the direction toward the pin, then disappear…

There were 4 balls on the green before and there were still only 4 balls on the green after…

As we approached the green, I jumped out of the moving golf cart at about 15 mph and sprinted toward the hole…

When I arrived, I looked into the hole and then looked back at the dudes shrugging my shoulders. I think it was Rock who then said, “Where did it go then???”

My response…

“Right f*cking HERE.”

I then reached into the hole and pulled out my first and only hole in one to this day.

In golf and in life, so long as we are still playing we will experience a relatively consistent series of ebbs and flows. Yet, as all golfers and most rational human beings know, when times get down and we approach rock bottom, so long as we remain optimistic, there always seems to be that ONE SHOT that brings us right back into the game…

Yet, that shot doesn’t just happen. It’s something we MAKE through a positive mindset, relentless attitude and a little pep talk to the club. 🗣🏌️‍♂️
