Following up on yesterday’s “Get Your Ass Up” Daily Hustle, I feel like it’s time to have “The Owls & The Eagles” talk…
While at UCLA, my Freshman year we had a RAGING team party before our final fall league game and just about the entire team showed up for the game looking like a gigantic bag of shit…
Assistant coach Vince Beringhele knew exactly what had gone on and came out to our team stretch with one clear message:
“Hey dudes, I realize you guys are in college and want to enjoy yourselves, but let me remind you, if you are going to hoot with the owls, you better soar with the fucking eagles,” he then immediately walked off…
Gosh damn I fucking LOVED it.
No idea how I played that day, but I assure you it was balls to the wall.
My entire life ever since, I have constantly reminded myself and others of Vinny’s command…
Of course, there are going to be nights where we stay up too late and we may even overindulge in a few too many adult beverages, but regardless of how we feel in the morning, we need to get our asses CHARGING.
“But Byrnes, when I get up in the morning after a night like that, my head really hurts and all I want to do is stay in bed all day.”
Hey, it’s Stevie SuperSoft!!! Look dude, outside of displaying traits such as accountability and resilience (two things you know nothing about), by getting up and moving the next day after an all night bender, believe it or not, we will actually feel better.
When we overindulge or when we are working with minimal sleep, we typically are dehydrated and for various reasons, our bodies are dealing with all sorts of inflammation — the absolute root of all evil… By getting our asses out of the rack, hydrating and then moving, we instantly promote blood flow which serves as a natural anti-inflammatory and instant healer.
Look Stevie, sometimes people put alcohol in our drink, and sometimes, we stay up past our bedtime, but in order to survive and thrive in the real world, we must be able to adapt and perform when we don’t always feel our best… Hooting with the owls can be an amazing experience and we are not trying to deny those opportunities… Of course, hooting is fun but it is also easy and just about anybody can indulge in the late night owls work…
Yet, if we are able to RISE UP in the morning while the rest of the commoners are sawing logs in a feeble attempt to rebound from the night before, the sky becomes the limit and the eagles our flying partners…
Bottom line: It’s ok to hoot but you better be ready to fucking SOAR.
