Was reading a Daily Dad the other day about famed author F.Scott Fitzgerald who passed away in 1940 at 44 years old… Scott, who struggled with alcoholism, left behind his wife Zelda and daughter Scottie at an age and time when he should have had so much more life to give…
In later interviews after Fitzgerald’s death, Zelda summed up her experience with him as a husband & father with this fascinating account…
“In retrospect, it seems as if he was always planning happiness for Scottie, and for me. Books to read — places to go. Life seemed so promising when he was around.”
Zelda had her own issues and was diagnosed with schizophrenia and spent much of the later years of her life in and out of mental institutions… Yet, what she said about our dude F. Scott is what we could all only hope somebody in our lives would say about us when our time on earth is complete.
The only place happiness will ever come from is within, but that doesn’t mean we can’t plan for it by putting ourselves & others in a position to experience things that tend to lead us in that direction…
Zelda mentioned “books” and I truly believe there is no greater gift than a book recommendation that has the ability to positively impact somebody’s life…
“Places to go” that Zelda referred to are first-hand, shared experiences that no matter how big or small, define moments in time that constitute much of the meaning of life…
Lastly, she concluded that life was “promising” when Fitzgerald was around…
Sure, F. Scott had plenty of problems and Zelda definitely had her own… Like many of us, they were flawed humans but at the end of his life and very near the end of hers, it was the good books and fun moments created by PLANNED HAPPINESS that she was able to reflect upon…
