“Plans are useless but planning is indispensable” – Eisenhower

While recently reading The Coaching Habit written by Michael Bungay Stanier, I came across a quote from Dwight Eisenhower that got my thinking brain FIRING…

“Plans are useless but planning is indispensable.”

For years, we here at the Daily Hustle have preached the importance of preparation but we have also discussed the incredible value of adaptation, change and going with the flow.

There have been several times when I personally have felt like I have contradicted myself, but I have tried not to take my feelings too personal and simply have marched on in search of savage sage wisdom available to us in all sizes, shapes and forms…

Then, when I read this Eisenhower GEM, life all of a sudden began to make more sense…

Lets dive in 🏊🏼‍♂️

“Plans are useless” – This part of the quote tells me that when we become set in our ways and unwilling to adjust to the ever changing world, the plans we attempt to script in stone will get shattered over our f*ing heads…

“But planning is indispensable.” – The second section of this beautiful quotation recognizes the vital importance of planning… Sure, we know that it is impossible to script life, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have a plan going into the game…

As a matter of fact, legendary football coach Bill Walsh would always script the first 20 plays of the game, but he also knew as well as anybody that his team’s ability to appropriately respond to the unknown variables is what ultimately was going to win them the game.

Bottom line: Unwavering and uncompromising plans are USELESS… Essential planning with the ability to stay fluid is INDISPENSABLE.
