Priorities 🤷‍♂️

A few weeks ago I was in Jackson Hole Wyoming with my kids’ Northstar ski team and had a very difficult choice to make…

Knock out a 4K swim and a 30-mile tempo run or go slaughter the slopes with the groms.

That morning when I woke up, we were exactly 3 weeks out from the UltraMan competition, which from my experience I would consider the most crucial training weekend before the race. Not only that day, but the entire weekend should have been spent specifically preparing for unchartered territories I would soon embark on…

I Speedo’d up, went out on the balcony then hopped on the #TeamGoHard Foot Reflexology to prepare my body and mind for a long day of training…

As I stared out at the Grand Teton mountain range, I’m pretty sure I heard a voice…

“Byrnesie… Here I am… All white & fluffy… Come & GET SOME.”

Yup… The mountains were officially calling. 🏔

I quickly shedded the speedo then fired on my boots and hit the slopes with my kids and the team for the next two hours…

Definitely, the RIGHT CALL.

After the ski session, I managed to crush 28 hard charging snow miles so my training was not completely lost, just a bit swim compromised…

Later that night, we were at a big dinner and one of the Dad’s asked me how I am able to juggle the family, work, training & play demands that life constantly thrusts upon us…

This was my response, or at least pretty close to it (I was working on my 3rd Don Julio 1942 at that moment)…

“Each day we get up, we get to decide who and what we want to prioritize in life… Too often we make the mistake of becoming slaves to our schedule and end up missing out on amazing opportunities. There is no doubt that family is my number 1 priority in life, but after that, everything else is secondary and every day we get to make a choice of how we want to stack it. The most important thing for all of us is being able to adjust and adapt to the constantly changing world we encounter on a daily basis… Sure, the responsible and logical thing to do today was probably swim 4K then hit the 30 miles, but I figure why swim 4K chasing a black line when I can ski 10k chasing my 3 little rug rats around an EPIC mountain… Because we have a responsibility to prepare for our commitments, sometimes doing what we should do and what we want to do can be a very difficult decision… Yet, when we are able to define and understand our priorities in life, the choices we have to make become a lot clearer. Oh yea, and when we are in Jackson Hole and the kids & the mountains come calling, it’s our universal obligation to grab our skis and go CHARGING 🎿”
