Process For Improvement

In Blog, Hustle Podcast by Eric ByrnesLeave a Comment

A few weeks ago our Let Them Play 11U baseball team went to Texas and lost the first game we played against a team that we were much better than…

We hit into 4 double plays and they were all base running mistakes that I will take 100% responsibility for. As the head coach it is my job to properly teach them about leads, jumps and reading all situations they may encounter in a game…

I could have made several excuses but at the end of the day, I failed at my job.

So… Instead of trying to pile on the kids and just write them off as inexperienced base runners, I took the rest of the weekend to HAMMER home baserunning fundamentals…

These fundamentals laid out a process for improvement:

  1. Confirm how many outs there are as soon as we get on base…
  2. Check where the fielders are positioned…
  3. Get the proper 3-step lead at 1st, triangle walking lead at 2nd, and as much as the 3rd baseman gives us at 3rd…
  4. Steal every time the pitcher lifts his leg…
  5. Shut it down when the kid throws cheese and has a quick slide step. 😅

Too often in life we bitch about the problem, make every excuse in the book about why it’s NOT our fault, then do absolutely nothing to address it…

By no means were we perfect the rest of the tourney or at the next tourney, but we made DRASTIC improvements on the bases and fought our asses off to get to the championship game two weekends in a row.

Bottom line…

Take responsibility, address the area of concern, then figure out the PROCESS FOR IMPROVEMENT.
