The other day I told my 8 year old to get out of his pajamas, hop in the shower and put some fresh clothes on…
Of course my instructions were met with the Biscuit’s favorite 3 letter word…
Why?
Before answering, I had a “pause” moment where I wanted to slow down and thoughtfully respond with something a lot more meaningful than…
“Because I said so.”
As parents, coaches and educators, we too often use this instinctual and emotional cop out answer because it’s convenient and immediately puts an end to further discussion…
Yet, if we fail to make the child or person understand the reasoning behind what we ask of them, they will fail to truly understand the “why” and inevitably revert to their actions, attitude and behavior, or lack thereof…
“Listen dude, whether you like it or not, our family is a team and you are a member of our squad… Although we give you kids the autonomy to cut your hair how you want, wear the clothes you desire and partake in the activities of your choosing, we are all representatives of the team and what each one of us does individually is a direct reflection of our family…
That said, the reason why we stay consistent in taking care of all of the little things in our lives is because all of these little things will eventually lead to gigantic things…
Great Pa used to say ‘show me how you do anything and I’ll show you how you do everything.’ When we start our day with a morning routine that includes the basic hygiene no-brainers, the rest of our day will flow naturally and guess what?!?!?
You won’t stink!!!
Just like making our bed, our day continues with 3 more tasks complete and most importantly, it will lead to a lot more tasks complete throughout the day.
So… Brush your teeth, and then get your ass in the shower and put on some fresh clothes…”
“Why?”
Because I f*ing said so, that’s why. 🤣
