Fly like “The Hawk” 🦅

In Blog, Hustle Podcast by Eric Byrnes

Was sloshing through a planned, 30-mile session preparing for the Let Them Play World Record Speed Golf Challenge when I got a text from Eric Gilsenan (EG), telling me to turn on The Jim Rome Show…

EG is a staple in the endurance world, so I knew when he told me to tune in, Rome had to be talking about some element of endurance sports.

I quickly fired up the CBS radio app, and sure enough, Rome was GOING OFF, as only he can, about his producer Adam Hawk who had just completed the LA Marathon.

Apparently, Hawk did NOT train yet showed up to the start line anyway and GRINDED through 26.2 miles… EG, who is a regular Rome listener, actually reached out to Hawk the week before the race, and although it was too late to help him physically prepare, EG shared his wisdom that would help him psychologically and also gave Hawk nutrition tips that would ensure he was properly fueled throughout the journey.

Rome gave a detailed play by play of the final mile, which he described Hawk shuffling along, capturing the moment on periscope while getting passed by walkers.

Eventually, Hawk crossed the finish line 6 hours and 18 minutes after the race begun.

My first thought was HOLY SHIT BALLS… 6 Hours and 18 minutes is a LONG time to be out on a 26.2 mile course…

My second thought was what a F*CKING EFFORT…

As Rome read emails and tweets crushing Hawk and the amount of time it took him to complete the marathon, I felt inclined to chime in, so I sent Rome a text…

“Dude!!! Happened to be listening on a treadmill knocking out 30 miles preparing to go after 24 hour Speed Golf World Record next month… Wasn’t really feeling it today and was thinking of shutting it down at 20, but “The Hawk’s “6 hour and 18 minute Marathon story just motivated me to CHARGE THE F*CK ON 👊🤣. WAR TO THE MOTHER F*CKING  HAWK.”

Rome promptly responded then read the text on air… I followed up with one more that he also read on air that furthered my support for a dude that just went through the TRENCHES for 6 plus hours…

“Hawk went DEEP into the pain cave… Type of pain that lets u know u are f*cking  ALIVE… Tell that dude to keep charging & reach out if he needs any guidance for next adventure…”

How many times have I told you Go Hards, we are capable of so much more than we believe. Here is a dude that didn’t train at all, showed up to a marathon and knocked that sh*t out.

So often in life, we do not attempt something because we feel like everything needs to be perfect and we need to be perfectly prepared. Yet, part of the beauty in life is taking on challenges that push us beyond our limits and perceived capabilities.

The Problem is that our ego gets in the way because we are embarrassed to fail and we are embarrassed to not be good at something, so we become unwilling to put ourselves into vulnerable positions…

Adam Hawk just endured an EPIC EXPERIENCE and became an official marathon finisher (which under 1% of the population has ever accomplished) because he checked his EGO at the start line and didn’t give two f*cks about his time or what you or I thought of him…

We definitely can all use a little more Adam Hawk in our lives. 🦅
