In the same book we discussed in the Daily Hustle yesterday, Drive, author Daniel Pink goes in depth on the “They vs. We” culture…
When people are part of an organization, group or team and they refer to it as “they” when speaking, this typically means the leadership team has completely failed the squad…
On the other hand, when team members consistently use “we” when referring to the group, this is hard evidence that a culture of unity and togetherness exists.
The best teams I have ever been on are the ones where everybody takes ownership in the overall success of the organization. The 2002 “Moneyball” Oakland A’s were a perfect example of this… 25 guys working together on a daily basis with a goal and vision much bigger than one’s own individual accomplishments. Not surprising “we” went on to break the modern day win streak record by winning 20 consecutive games…
Ultimately, “We” cultures are created when egos are eliminated, each member of the team buys into their role and nobody gives two fucks about who gets the credit.
