Was doing an Instagram Live chat a couple weeks ago and a kid asked how he could become an MLB broadcaster…Â
This was my answer:Â
If you want to be a writer, write.
If you want to be a lawyer, study law.
If you want to be a pilot, fly.
If you want to be a baseball player, play baseball,
and if you want to be a broadcaster, BROADCAST!!!
For whatever reason, we often get so consumed with titles and a perceived end destination that we forget to take the necessary steps to get us there.
When I was a kid I wanted to do two things with my life…
- Play professional sportsÂ
- Be a professional sports broadcasterÂ
Yet, instead of simply fantasizing about playing in the big leagues and dreaming of sitting behind a microphone on TV and/or radio, I just continued to immerse myself in the baseball and broadcast cultures while doing two things that I absolutely loved…Â
While still playing, I would take advantage of media opportunities and even went so far as to seek them out. During the off-season, I would fill in at KNBR as a radio host and also worked as a correspondent for Fox. While in Arizona, I hosted a TV show and then as soon as I got done playing, I went to call NCAA regional games with my dude Kyle Peterson at ESPN…
Shortly thereafter, I started working at MLB Network & have been there ever since.
After spending 7 years writing The F*IT List – Life Lessons From A Human Crash Test Dummy, I fell in love with writing again so I decided to create the Daily Hustle and also do a corresponding podcast 5 days a week…Â
Both are things that I thoroughly enjoy doing, but I have never considered myself a writer nor would I label myself as a podcaster but ultimately does it really fucking matter? 🤷‍♂️
Bottom line is that whatever it is we want to be in our lives, let’s make sure we understand there is a process predicated on the ACTION of DOING the work and at the end of the day, no matter what that is, WE ARE WHAT WE DO.
